Arsenal FC have increased to four points their lead at the top of the Premier League after they won 2-0 against Southampton FC and Liverpool FC drew 3-3 at Merseyside neighbours Everton FC.
Arsenal, looking to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat at Manchester United FC prior to the international break, prevailed courtesy of Olivier Giroud's sixth and seventh top-flight goals of the season. Southampton, undefeated in the league since August, are replaced in third spot by Chelsea FC, who won 3-0 at West Ham United FC with the help of two Frank Lampard strikes against his former side.
Second-placed Liverpool started the day just two points adrift of the Gunners, but could have ended it even worse off had it not been for Daniel Sturridge's 89th-minute equaliser at Goodison Park. The Reds twice went in front in the first half – through Coutinho and Luis Suárez – but fell behind after the break to two Romelu Lukaku goals. Sturridge's header earned them a share of the spoils.
Ten-man Crystal Palace FC, meanwhile, buoyed by the appointment of Tony Pulis as manager earlier in the day, won 1-0 at Hull City AFC – only their second league victory of the season – to move off the foot of the table. Sunderland AFC are now bottom having lost 2-0 at Stoke City FC, the Potters' first league win in nearly three months. Elsewhere, Swansea City FC won 2-1 at Fulham FC and Newcastle United FC triumphed 2-1 against Norwich City FC.
