West Bromwich Albion FC have relieved Steve Clarke of his managerial duties after losing 1-0 to Cardiff City AFC on Saturday.
The defeat in the Welsh capital left West Brom 16th in the Premier League and proved the last straw for Scotsman Clarke, formerly an assistant manager at Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC before his appointment by the Baggies in June 2012. Despite defeating Manchester United FC at Old Trafford and drawing with both Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC in the league this season, the club have lost their last four games and have not registered a win in their last six.
"We have reluctantly come to the decision to relieve Steve of his duties after very careful consideration," West Brom sporting and technical director Richard Garlick said. "With key games coming thick and fast, we felt it was important we acted now to give the club the best possible chance of a successful outcome this season."
Assistant Keith Downing will assume control of first-team affairs until a permanent appointment is made.
