Arsenal FC left it late as they beat Cardiff City FC to move back above Manchester City FC on a testing New Year's Day programme for the Premier League's leading sides.
Arsène Wenger's team looked set for a surprise home draw as they went into the last two minutes locked at 0-0 with Cardiff. Substitute Nicklas Bendtner broke through, however, firing in from close range after Bacary Sagna's header was saved before Theo Walcott – earlier denied by the post – converted Jack Wilshere's sublime pass to seal it.
It took Arsenal back above Manchester City, who had earlier made it seven wins from seven with a 3-2 victory at Swansea City AFC. Two goals from Wilfried Bony ensured the visitors could never completely relax. Chelsea FC's 3-0 triumph at Southampton FC hinted at an easier trip, though the game was in the balance before Fernando Torres broke through on the hour.
Emanuel Adebayor scored again as Tottenham Hotspur FC consigned Manchester United FC to another defeat at Old Trafford while Luis Suárez's 20th league goal of the season helped secure a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hull City AFC. That took Liverpool FC up to fourth, capitalising on Everton FC's 1-1 draw at Stoke City FC – it could have been worse for the Toffees but Leighton Baines converted a last spot kick to earn a point.
There was another late penalty at West Bromwich Albion FC, Saido Berahino converting to earn the hosts the spoils against ten-man Newcastle United FC. West Brom's local rivals Aston Villa FC were also 1-0 winners, at Sunderland AFC, while Fulham FC came from behind to prevail 2-1 against a West Ham United FC side who had Kevin Nolan sent off before half-time.
