Manchester City brush past Spurs to go top

Manchester City FC continued their free-scoring form with a 5-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur FC that puts them one point clear at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester City FC moved a point clear at the top of the English Premier League thanks to a 5-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur FC.

City were 6-0 victors over Spurs in November, and were one up at White Hart Lane after just 15 minutes thanks to Sergio Agüero's neat finish. They added a second soon after half-time, when Yaya Touré converted from the spot after Danny Rose had been dismissed for a foul on Edin Džeko. The Bosnia and Herzegovina striker added a third, and though Spurs pulled one back through Étienne Capoue, Stevan Jovetić and Vincent Kompany iced the cake for Manuel Pellegrini's team.

Three points behind City – and two adrift of second-placed Arsenal FC – are Chelsea FC, held to a goalless draw at home by West Ham United FC. The Hammers, though, remain in the bottom three, two points shy of safety. One place outside the relegation zone are Sunderland AFC, 1-0 winners against a Stoke City FC side who are themselves only a point and a place ahead of the Black Cats.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa FC recovered from going two down inside nine minutes to win 4-3 against West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion FC.
