Peter Crouch became an instant hero with the Aston Villa FC faithful as he scored a stunning goal to earn his new club a deserved share of the spoils in a pulsating FA Premiership encounter with Newcastle United FC tonight.
The 1.98m striker showed the kind of deadly finishing which brought him 19 goals for Portsmouth FC prior to last week’s move to Villa in a deal which could rise to €9.8m. Crouch received a standing ovation when he was substituted with 15 minutes to go.
Newcastle were the better side in the opening 20 minutes and Alan Shearer's 22nd goal of the campaign - and 199th in the Premiership - gave them the perfect start after just three minutes. The former England captain was on hand to tap home a Laurent Robert shot which had rebounded off a post.
Back on terms
But, after 25 minutes, Crouch produced a superb finish to put Villa back on level terms. Barry supplied one of several dangerous crosses from the left flank and Crouch got in front of Nikos Dabizas to send a powerful header across goalkeeper Shay Given and into the corner of the net.
Champions League spot
The point enables Newcastle to remain on course for a UEFA Champions League spot. Bobby Robson's side are now three points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea FC and have a game in hand.
