Tottenham Hotspur FC have exercised the use of "a break clause" in Tim Sherwood's contract to relieve the manager of his duties after less than five months in charge.

Tottenham Hotspur FC have confirmed the departure of manager Tim Sherwood after less than five months in the role.

Sherwood, 45, was named as André Villas-Boas's successor on 23 December last year and guided the north London club to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League as well as a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. A 1995 Premier League-winning captain, Sherwood joined Tottenham's back-room team in 2008 before taking charge of the Under-21 side in 2012.

"We appointed Tim mid-season as someone who knew both the players and the club," chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement on the Spurs website. "We agreed an 18-month contract with a break clause at the end of the season and we have now exercised that option.

"Since appointing Tim as assistant first-team coach in 2008 and then as technical coordinator in 2010 and head of football development in 2012, we have been supportive of him during football management changes throughout that period. On behalf of the club, I should like to state our thanks for all his efforts during his years with us. We wish him great success in his managerial career."

Levy would not be drawn on the subject of a new appointment, however, adding: "Moving forward, now the season is over, we shall embark on the process of finding a new head coach. We have a talented squad and exciting young players coming through. We need to build on this season, develop our potential and inspire the kind of performances we associate with our great club."

Tottenham's top-six finish ensures they will compete in next season's UEFA Europa League, although the result of Saturday's FA Cup final between Arsenal FC and Hull City AFC will determine which stage they enter.
