Everton tie Martínez to new five-year deal

"I am really excited about next season," said Everton FC manager Roberto Martínez after his impressive first campaign in charge was rewarded with a new five-year deal.

Everton FC have rewarded Roberto Martínez with a new five-year contract after an impressive first season in charge at Goodison Park.

Martínez left Wigan Athletic FC – where he won the 2013 FA Cup – last summer to succeed David Moyes following his departure to Manchester United FC. He guided the Toffees to a fifth-placed finish – and into the UEFA Europa League – with a record Premier League points tally.

"I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to make a further commitment to Everton," said Martínez, who started his managerial career with Swansea City AFC. "I loved my first season at the club. I could not be more proud of the way Everton performed throughout the entire season and the memories we were able to make together. I am really excited about next season. I knew from the moment I arrived at Everton that this was a special place."

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright added: "In many commentators' eyes, Roberto Martínez is the best young manager in Europe. We agree." The 40-year-old's new deal is set to expire at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.
