FC Barcelona slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to ten-man Athletic Club Bilbao in round 14 of the Primera División on Saturday.
Spanish international striker Santiago Ezquerro scored his first goal of the season with ten minutes to go to stun home supporters at the Camp Nou stadium and bring Barcelona back down to earth after their 3-1 UEFA Champions League victory over Liverpool FC at Anfield stadium on Tuesday.
Bilbao had lost José Lacruz after 75 minutes when the defender was shown the red card for an off-the-ball clash with Rivaldo and they had to endure a late rally by the home side to secure their victory.
Urzaiz on target
The visitors took the lead after ten minutes when Ismael Urzaiz headed home a Francisco Yeste free-kick. It took Rivaldo's appearance as a second-half substitute to bring Barcelona back into the game. The Brazilian had been excluded from the starting lineup because of a bout of flu, but within two minutes of entering the fray he brought Barcelona back on level terms, volleying home following a Xavi Hernández's free-kick on 58 minutes.
Straight at Lafuente
Rivaldo almost snatched an equaliser as the clock ran down but he directed his late shot straight at Athletic goalkeeper Iñaki Lafuente.
Level on points
With the remainder of the Primera División sides playing on Sunday, Barcelona are third in the league table on 23 points. Athletic, meanwhile, are now level on points with Barcelona and Valencia CF but they remain in fifth place thanks to an inferior goal difference.
