Real Betis Balompié climbed to second in the Primera División on Sunday after a 1-0 win over CD Tenerife, who finished the game in Sevilla with eight men.
Eight players were booked in the second half, with Tenerife's Federico Basavilbaso and Bruno Marioni sent off and Esteban Fuertes forced to leave the pitch injured after they had already used all three substitutes. Betis trail leaders Deportivo Alavés on goal difference thanks to Joaquin's stunning 56th-minute volley.
RC Celta de Vigo erased the memory of the midweek Copa del Rey exit at the hands of second division UD Salamanca by beating Villarreal CF 3-1. Edu scored twice in as many minutes to add to Jesuli's opener, meaning Antonio Guayre's reply for Villarreal was merely a consolation.
Málaga CF survived the second-half sending off of Darío Silva to record a valuable 1-0 win over Real Sociedad, lifting them clear of the relegation zone. The Uruguay striker, who was making his Primera División return after suffering a shoulder injury, went in late on Xabier Alonso in the 66th minute and was instantly dismissed by referee Megia Davila. Miguel Angel scored the game's only goal in the 39th minute.
Real Valladolid put distance between themselves and the foot of the table with a comfortable 3-1 win over bottom club Rayo Vallecano at the José Zorilla stadium. Two goals by Fernando and a third from Chema rendered Elvir Baljic's goal academic and gave Valladolid the points against struggling Vallecano.
UD Las Palmas were out of sorts in the first half against Sevilla FC but came storming back after the interval to claim maximum points. Josico's first goal of the season won it for the Canary Islanders, who are now three points clear of the bottom three. The midfield player struck in the 72nd minute after a penalty area scramble.
Two for Urzaiz
Two goals from Ismael Urzaiz gave Athletic Club Bilbao a 2-1 victory over Real Zaragoza at the San Mamés stadium. The Spain striker hit his seventh and eighth of the campaign to extend in-form Bilbao's unbeaten run to seven matches. Yordi replied for Zaragoza.
