Real Madrid CF moved to the top of the Primera División with a hard-fought 2-0 away win at CD Tenerife.
Figo calms Real nerves
Madrid opened the scoring after 14 minutes when Iván Helguera accepted a knock-down from Claude Makelele, turned and thrashed the ball home. The visitors withstood considerable pressure as Tenerife drove forward in search of an equaliser, but the game was settled in the closing minutes when Luis Figo scored from the penalty spot after Federico Lussenhoff was adjudged to have fouled Fernando Hierro.
Six goals in the second half saw Athletic Club Bilbao and Sevilla FC share the points in a 3-3 draw. Moisés García gave Sevilla a 48th-minute lead but Joseba Etxeberria hit back for Biilbao. José Antonio Reyes gave Sevilla the lead again only for Ismael Urzaiz to level again. Reyes scored again to give Sevilla hope of a victory but once more Bilbao hit back with Santi Ezquerro scoring a dramatic overhead kick to secure a draw.
