A goal either side of half-time from striker Ruben Navarro gave Deportivo Alavés a 2-0 win at Real Zaragoza on Sunday and three points that took them back to the top of the Primera División.
Navarro hit his first nine minutes before the break as he diverted a long-distance strike from Jesús Ángel Turiel around keeper Juan Juanmi. Three minutes after the break he added his second with an exquisite chip after latching on to a pin-point pass from Pablo.
FC Barcelona will be kicking themselves for surrendering a two-goal lead against RC Celta de Vigo at the Camp Nou stadium. Gabri García got the home team off to a flying start after just two minutes and Javier Saviola pounced to add the second immediately after half-time. However, Sergi Barjuán turned a Valeri Karpin cross into his own net on 74 minutes and soon after Edu headed in the equaliser. Karpin was sent off in injury time for lashing out at Sergi.
Five without a win
RC Deportivo La Coruña coach Javier Irureta opted for an attacking strategy by playing both Diego Tristán and Roy Makaay up front. However, it took a 60th-minute penalty to break down a dogged Valencia CF defence, Tristán sending Santiago Cañizares the wrong way after Roberto Fabián Ayala was adjudged to have fouled Juan Valerón. The defeat was only Valencia's second of the season and extended their run to five matches without a win.
Club Atlético Osasuna notched their first victory in six outings as they beat Real Valladolid thanks to an 85th-minute goal from substitute Mariano Armentano.
There was no respite for the Primera Division's bottom club, Rayo Vallecano, who were unable to claim a win against a UD Las Palmas side reduced to ten men a minute before the break when Ángel was sent off for a rash challenge on Roberto Peragón. Defeat for Vallecano looked on the cards when the visitors were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute, but Marcos Sequeiros missed from the spot.
RCD Mallorca drew 1-1 with Málaga CF after Miguel Ángel Nadal's close-range finish restored parity after defender Álvaro Novo had headed into his own net to put the visitors in front on 30 minutes.
Villarreal came from behind to claim a point at home to RCD Espanyol. Raúl Tamudo put the visitors in front after just four minutes but Villarreal levelled 20 minutes later when Espanyol keeper Juan Luis Mora hit a rushed clearance straight at Javier Calleja and the midfield player coolly returned the ball over Mora's head and into the net.
In Sunday's other match, it finished goalless between Real Sociedad and Real Betis Balompié.
