RCD Mallorca have moved level on points with fourth-placed Sevilla FC following a 3-2 win against Valencia CF.
FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF hogged the limelight as they came face to face in the Spanish capital this weekend and both remain streaks ahead at the Liga summit, but the race to complete the top four looks far from decided. Sevilla secured maximum points on Saturday to go five points behind Valencia, yet they are still being hotly pursued by Mallorca. Gregorio Manzano's side are now level with the Andalusian outfit after overcoming Valencia thanks to first-half strikes from Gonzalo Castro Irizabal and Pierre Webó plus a Manuel Fernandes own goal shortly after the hour mark.
Athletic Club are sixth, three points shy of Mallorca after a 4-1 win over UD Almería that came, in part, thanks to two goals from Javi Martínez. Elsewhere, Riki gave RC Deportivo La Coruña a first-minute lead against Real Racing Club, only for Toni Moral to equalise six minutes from time to earn the visitors a share of the spoils. As for RCD Espanyol, they recorded a 3-0 victory over UEFA Europa League semi-finalists Club Atlético de Madrid, who ended with ten players. Also depleted by a man at the final whistle, CA Osasuna triumphed 2-0 against Real Zaragoza.
