Sevilla stalemate bucks trend on day of goals

Sevilla FC are third in the Spanish Liga despite having been held to a goalless draw at home against RC Deportivo La Coruña.

Los Rojiblancos, who beat Levante UD on the opening weekend of the season, now trail Club Atlético de Madrid and Valencia CF – both of whom have won their first two fixtures – by two points. A further point adrift in fifth are Villarreal CF after they got off the mark in emphatic style, beating ten-man RCD Espanyol 4-0 with the help of two goals from Giuseppe Rossi.

Getafe CF also struck four against bottom placed Levante, who lost 4-1 for the second successive week. There were even more goals elsewhere, though, Málaga CF triumphing 5-3 at Real Zaragoza, Fernando scoring twice. RCD Mallorca, meanwhile, remain in the bottom three after suffering a 2-0 defeat at Real Sporting de Gijón.
