Valencia extend lead at Athletic's expense

UEFA Champions League contenders Valencia CF are guaranteed to end the weekend on top of the Liga after Aritz Aduriz and Vicente earned the hosts a 2-1 victory against Athletic Club.

Aritz Aduriz and Vicente were on target as Valencia CF recorded a 2-1 win against Athletic Club which extends their lead at the Liga summit to four points.

Aduriz headed in the opener on 11 minutes after Roberto Soldado weaved his way to the byline and chipped the ball into the striker's path. Substitute Vicente (90+1) doubled the lead when he finished off a swift counterattack, only for Igor Gabilondo to set up a breathless finale with a left-footed free-kick seconds later.

Valencia's advantage will be trimmed to one point again if Villarreal CF – at home to Real Racing Club – and FC Barcelona, against RCD Mallorca, win their respective games on Sunday.

Earlier, Florent Sinama Pongolle scored twice as struggling Real Zaragoza recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Real Sporting de Gijón. Zaragoza, who are bottom and without a win this term, were reduced to ten men when Jiří Jarošík was dismissed moments before Diego Castro (49) doubled the visitors' lead from the penalty spot. In the other game, Real Sociedad de Fútbol defeated RCD Espanyol 1-0 at home thanks to Juan Forlín's 85th-minute own goal.
