FC Barcelona equalled their club record of 14 successive Liga victories with a 3-0 triumph against Real Racing Club on a night when Luís Fabiano starred for Sevilla FC at home to Levante UD.
The Azulgrana, whose 28-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to end when they lost the second leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final to Real Betis Balompié on Wednesday, were ahead inside 90 seconds through Pedro Rodríguez's sixth goal of 2011. Lionel Messi (33) did what he failed to do in midweek – succeed from the penalty spot – with Andrés Iniesta's deflected shot (56) putting the seal on a win which matched the run achieved under Frank Rijkaard in 2005/06.
Elsewhere, Valencia CF struggled to a 4-3 home win against nine-man Málaga CF. The visitors, who had Martín Demichelis (5) and Hélder Rosário (65) dismissed but twice led, succumbed to Aritz Aduriz's late strike (89) which lifted the hosts up to third place. Luís Fabiano, meanwhile, took his Liga tally for the season to eight with a hat-trick in Sevilla's 4-1 triumph over second-bottom Levante. Julien Escudé scored the other for the UEFA Europa League contenders.
