Real Betis Balompié were playing second-flight football last season but find themselves sharing the view from the Liga summit after their second successive 1-0 victory.
It was Rubén Castro who struck the 88th-minute winner against Granada CF on the opening day of the season, and the same striker left it late again against RCD Mallorca, producing the only goal of the game four minutes from time to take the Seville-based club to a share of top spot alongside Real Madrid CF and Valencia CF.
CA Osasuna are two points further back after sealing a 2-1 home win against Real Sporting de Gijón. Two strikes in the space of three first-half minutes by Nino and Álvaro Cejudo gave the hosts an early cushion, and although David Barral hit back (75), his effort would prove to be the visitors' only goal.
Elsewhere, Real Racing Club and Rayo Vallecano were held to respective goalless draws at home by Levante UD and Real Zaragoza, while in the late fixture RCD Espanyol overcame Athletic Club as Luis García's double (25, 73) sandwiched Fernando Llorente's equaliser (62).
