Messi prevents Madrid galloping further clear

A superb Lionel Messi free-kick earned FC Barcelona a 2-1 win at Club Atlético de Madrid that kept his side ten points behind Real Madrid CF, who beat Rayo Vallecano de Madrid 1-0.

Lionel Messi rode to the rescue for FC Barcelona with the decisive late goal in a 2-1 victory at Club Atlético de Madrid as the Liga champions kept the gap to leaders Real Madrid CF down to ten points.

Visitors Barcelona took a 36th-minute lead in the capital when Cesc Fàbregas rolled the ball across goal from the left for Daniel Alves to steer in at the far post. Their hopes of travelling back with three points nonetheless took a blow when Falcao volleyed in shortly after the break, but Messi then curled in an exquisite free-kick with nine minutes remaining.

That came after Real Madrid had recorded a ninth consecutive Liga victory thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's 54th-minute effort in a 1-0 triumph at Rayo Vallecano de Madrid. The Portugal forward back-heeled into the far corner following a corner as José Mourinho's side showed no signs of flagging in the title race.

In third, Valencia CF slipped to a 2-1 reverse at home against Sevilla FC, Jesús Navas grabbing the winner 20 minutes from time. Elsewhere, Real Sociedad de Fútbol gave themselves breathing space away from the relegation zone by downing RCD Mallorca 1-0, Villarreal CF drew 2-2 with Athletic Club and CA Osasuna defeated Granada CF 2-1.
