Valencia CF missed the chance to go three points clear of fourth-placed Málaga CF after being held to a 1-1 home draw by local rivals Levante UD.
The hosts went into the match looking to arrest a three-game losing streak in all competitions and they took the lead after 35 minutes through Jonas. However, fifth-placed Levante also harbour UEFA Champions League ambitions and hit back on 54 minutes courtesy of Arouna Koné's 11th league goal of the campaign.
Elsewhere, Club Atlético de Madrid provided the perfect response to last week's defeat at Real Zaragoza by winning 3-0 against Getafe CF. Eduardo Salvio's 24th-minute strike opened the scoring for the Rojiblancos, with Diego and Falcao increasing their advantage in the second half.
In the day's late kick-offs, goals from Imanol Agirretxe, David Zurutuza, Antoine Griezmann and Carlos Vela ensured Real Sociedad de Fútbol romped to a 4-0 win at home to Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, while Villarreal CF moved four points clear of the relegation zone with a goalless stalemate at home to RCD Espanyol.
