Raúl González struck seven minutes from time to earn Real Madrid CF a 1-0 win against RC Celta de Vigo on Saturday and take Vicente del Bosque's side back to the top of the Primera División table.
The Spanish international striker scored for the second week running with a finely judged header from Zinedine Zidane's cross to put a gloss on what had been a hard-fought encounter in the Balaídos stadium. The result gives the reigning champions and title favourites 49 points from 28 games, two clear of Valencia CF, who are away to Real Zaragoza on Sunday.
Maakay on target
Sevilla FC's hopes of European qualification took a knock when they were beaten 1-0 at home by RC Deportivo La Coruña. Dutch international Roy Makaay scored seven minutes into the second half at the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium to keep his team in the title race. They are currently in third place and just two points behind Madrid, while Sevilla remain tenth.
Real Betis Balompié are just a point behind Deportivo after a 1-1 draw at Villarreal CF's Madrigal stadium. Former Spanish international Guillermo Amor netted after 20 minutes for the home side, but Dani restored parity eight minutes before the break. Villarreal now have a five-point safety cushion over Rayo Vallecano in the highest relegation place.
