Real Madrid CF overtook their neighbours Club Atlético de Madrid to move second in the Liga as the capital clubs experienced differing fortunes on Sunday.
José Mourinho’s side are now FC Barcelona's closest challengers, a daunting 13 points off the pace, after battling to a 2-1 win at RC Celta de Vigo. Cristiano Ronaldo scrambled the visitors in front from close range after the break, before Iago Aspas drew things level within two minutes.
Unperturbed, Ronaldo then struck his second of the day from the spot with 18 minutes remaining to cap an excellent week for Madrid, during which they also secured progress to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Atlético, meanwhile, dropped their first points of the season at the Estadio Vicente Calderón. After 13 straight wins on their own patch, the hosts slipped to a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad de Fútbol, Xabier Prieto rushing clear on the break in the 53rd minute to make the difference.
Also on Sunday, Valencia CF missed the chance to go fourth with a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Club, while Levante UD and Getafe CF played out a 0-0 stalemate.
