Valencia prevent Atlético going second

Club Atlético de Madrid were unable to retake second spot in the Liga after being held at home by Valencia CF, and fourth-placed Real Sociedad de Fútbol also picked up a point.

Club Atlético de Madrid were unable to retake second spot in the Liga from derby rivals Real Madrid CF after failing to win at home for the second game in succession.

With José Mourinho's Madrid drawing yesterday, the door was left open for Diego Simeone's men to leapfrog the Merengues, but they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Valencia CF. After their 13-game winning streak at the Estadio Vicente Calderón was ended by Real Sociedad de Fútbol three weeks ago, Atlético fell behind with five minutes gone when Jonas registered from close range. The visitors enjoyed just the briefest of leads, however, as Falcao converted Arda Turan's cross a minute later to leave his side one point behind Madrid.

As for Sociedad, they sit a place below in Spain's fourth UEFA Champions League spot following a 2-2 draw at RCD Espanyol. The Barcelona club were ahead twice, but a David Zurutuza strike and a Javi López own goal kept the European dream very much alive for Philippe Montanier's men.

Bottom club RC Deportivo La Coruña recorded a second straight Liga victory by prevailing 3-2 against RCD Mallorca, who lie one place above Fernando Vázquez's team. Elsewhere, Kike Sola struck twice as CA Osasuna engineered a 3-1 comeback victory at Real Valladolid CF.
