Málaga CF have appointed Bernd Schuster as their new coach, with the former West Germany midfielder agreeing terms on a five-year deal at La Rosaleda.
The 53-year-old – who enjoyed a successful playing career in Spain with FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético de Madrid – returns to the dugout having last coached at Turkish side Beşiktaş JK, resigning in March 2011. He will officially take charge of Málaga next week.
This is a ninth managerial appointment for Schuster – a UEFA European Championship winner in 1980 – who has occupied the helm of SC Fortuna Köln, 1. FC Köln, Xerez CD, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Levante UD, Getafe CF and Real Madrid. He claimed the 2007/08 Liga title with the Merengues. Schuster arrives at Málaga as successor to Manuel Pellegrini, who last month announced his decision to step down from last season's UEFA Champions League quarter-finalists.
