Spain's capital club rivals Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético de Madrid endured contrasting experiences on Saturday evening as they chase a place in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.
Shorn of the ill Gareth Bale and having rested a host of first team regulars including Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid, beaten by Atlético in last season's final, came unstuck in a goalless draw at CD Olímpic de Xàtiva in their round of 32 first leg. The home side, who ply their trade at the same level as Madrid's third team, refused to roll over and despite the second-half introductions of Luka Modrić and Karim Benzema, Carlo Ancelotti's men were left frustrated by a team keeping an eighth straight competitive clean sheet.
Meanwhile, two Arda Turan goals helped holders Atlético cruise to a 4-0 success at another third-tier side, UE Sant Andreu. The Turkey midfielder struck either side of half-time to steal the limelight, the first a goal of the season contender, showcasing his remarkable technical skill during an intricate build up with several team-mates. Raúl García had opened the scoring, rounded off by David Villa.
Santi Mina's goal ensured RC Celta de Vigo got the best of Athletic Club in the night's all-Liga encounter, while Levante UD lost 1-0 at RC Recreativo de Huelva. Ciprian Marica scored the equaliser as Getafe CF drew 1-1 at Girona. The second legs take place between 17 and 19 December.
