Barcelona back on top with Sevilla scalp

Lionel Messi struck twice as FC Barcelona triumphed 4-1 at Sevilla FC to return to the top in Spain, leading rivals Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético de Madrid on goal difference.

FC Barcelona suffered an early scare but saw off Sevilla FC 4-1 to return to the top of the Spanish Liga on Sunday, with Lionel Messi striking twice.

Gerardo Martino's side stumbled in the title race with their home loss to Valencia CF last weekend, but Club Atlético de Madrid's defeat by UD Almería yesterday reopened the door for the Catalan side. Nevertheless, it was Sevilla who opened the scoring, defender Alberto Moreno putting Barça on the back foot 15 minutes in.

In response, Messi set up Alexis Sánchez for a 34th-minute equaliser from a free-kick, before the Argentinian forward got his first a minute before the interval. Messi then side-footed in on the break after the restart and Cesc Fàbregas secured the points two minutes from time, leaving his side top ahead of Real Madrid CF and Atlético on goal difference.

Also on Sunday, Real Sociedad de Fútbol missed the chance to close within a point of fifth-placed Villarreal CF as they were held 0-0 by Levante UD, while CA Osasuna jumped to 14th courtesy of a 2-0 home success against Getafe CF, Oriol Riera and Roberto Torres getting the goals. Elsewhere, a pair of Humberto Osorio Botello strikes helped Real Valladolid CF come from two down to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Elche FC.
