Athletic Club beat Getafe CF 1-0 at San Mamés to move nine points clear of Basque rivals Real Sociedad de Fútbol and strengthen their grip on fourth place in the Spanish Liga.
Markel Susaeta scored the only goal of the game five minutes before the interval, curling in a stunning effort from 25 metres after a well-worked short free-kick routine. The defeat leaves Getafe in a perilous position, one point above Real Valladolid CF at the upper limit of the relegation zone.
Valladolid missed the chance to leapfrog the Madrid-based side into safety after letting a lead slip in a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano de Madrid. Compounding the home side's frustration was the fact that they were burned by their former player – Alberto Bueno's spectacular volley wiping out the early advantage handed Valladolid by Ze Castro's own goal.
Elsewhere, Yasine Brahimi's goal proved decisive as Granada CF edged out Elche CF 1-0. The margin of victory would have been greater had Francisco Rico Castro converted the second-half spot-kick conceded by Cristian Sapunaru, who was dismissed. RCD Espanyol were held to a goalless draw at home by Levante UD, who had Victor Casadesus sent off late on.
