Atlético, Barça held as Liga race goes to the wire

Club Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona will lock horns for the Liga title next Sunday after both had to settle for draws, while Real Madrid CF fell out of the reckoning with a loss.

The Liga race will go down to the final day of the season after Club Atlético de Madrid missed the chance to clinch the title by drawing 1-1 with Málaga CF – while FC Barcelona also failed to win and Real Madrid CF's hopes ended following a loss.

With Barcelona held to a goalless stalemate by Elche CF, Atlético could have wrapped up their first Liga crown since 1995/96 with victory at home to Málaga. David Villa struck the crossbar in the first period as the Rojiblancos piled on the pressure, but they fell behind when Samu struck on 65 minutes.

Although Toby Alderweireld's header brought things level, Diego Simeone's men failed to find a way through despite Marcos Angeleri's late sending-off. Atleti now need a point at the Camp Nou next week to secure the title, when Barça will be aiming for the win they require to take the championship courtesy of their head-to-head record.

As for Madrid, their chances have now been extinguished after a 2-0 reverse at RC Celta de Vigo left them five points behind their city rivals. Charles Dias de Oliveira scored either side of the interval to make it three games without a win for Carlo Ancelotti's troops.

Elsewhere, Real Sociedad de Fútbol held fourth-placed Athletic Club to a 1-1 draw, while Getafe CF climbed up to 16th with a 1-0 home success against fifth-placed Sevilla FC. UD Almería also claimed three points thanks to a 2-0 win at Granada CF, Real Betis Balompié beat Real Valladolid CF 4-3 and the game between RCD Espanyol and CA Osasuna ended 1-1.
