Club Atlético de Madrid defender Carlos Aguilera needed emergency treatment both on the pitch and in hospital after losing consciousness during his side's Spanish Cup defeat at RC Recreativo de Huelva last night.
"It's a tremendous shock but it looks like he's recovered," said Atlético vice-president Lázaro Albarracin at the Huelva hospital where Aguilera was being treated. "The player stopped breathing and lost consciousness for a while."
The 33-year-old Aguilera, a former Spanish international, was left motionless after being struck in the face by the ball late in the game. After receiving treatment on the pitch, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, he was taken by ambulance to hospital and treated in the accident and emergency department. Recreativo won the quarter-final first leg 1-0.
