Joan Laporta, a 40-year-old lawyer, has won the election to be president of FC Barcelona. He won the vote by a landslide, according to provisional results released by the club.
Laporta's main opponent was Lluis Bassat, a 61-year-old publicist who was the overwhelming favourite before the news that Laporta had a conditional deal with Manchester United FC to sign England captain David Beckham.
Six in the running
Laporta polled 52.57 per cent of votes, Bassat 31.8 per cent. More than 51,600 votes were cast. Six men were running for the top job at Barcelona, one of the biggest and most successful sporting clubs in the world.
