Vassiljev reclailms title as Estonia's best

"I have to prove that this recognition is not just a question of luck," said FC Amkar Perm midfielder Konstantin Vassiljev after being named Estonia's player of the year for a third time.

FC Amkar Perm midfielder Konstantin Vassiljev has been named Estonia's player of the year for a third time after missing out in 2012.

Selected by Estonian Football Association (EJL) representatives and football journalists, Vassiljev won the honour in 2010 and 2011 but lost to Ragnar Klavan in 2012 – with the FC Augsburg defender taking the runners-up spot this year. As for third place, that went to FC Volga Nizhny Novgorod goalkeeper Sergei Pareiko.

"I'm very happy to win this prize for the third time," said Vassiljev in a video message during Sunday's gala event. "I hope it gives me even more motivation to progress. I have to prove that this recognition is not just a question of luck.

"My favourite moment with the Estonia team this year was the match against the Netherlands [a 2-2 draw in October, in which Vassiljev scored twice]. It was just unbelievable. I hope that next year our fans will have more reasons to be happy."

FC Levadia Tallinn's Marko Kristal was recognised as coach of the year, meanwhile. The prize, awarded for the first time, was presented in memory of Albert Vollrat, the first ever Estonian coach of Estonia's national team. Vollrat also served as an assistant at Ferencvárosi TC and Arsenal FC, and won the Soviet Cup twice with FC Spartak Moskva.

The title of best young player went to Vitesse goalkeeper Marko Meerits, while Getter Laar of EA Guingamp was honoured as the female player of the year. Levadia Tallinn forward Rimo Hunt collected the award for the top player in the Estonian league, and Tarmo Rüütli, whose six-year tenure as Estonia coach finished on Thursday, received a golden plaque from the EJL.
