AJ Auxerre moved second in Le Championnat thanks to second-half goals from Philippe Mexes and prolific striker Djibril Cissé against AS Monaco FC on Saturday.
Cisse on top
Cissé's long-range volley lifted the Under-21 international level with FC Girondins de Bordeaux marksman Pauleta at the top of the league's scoring chart with eleven goals. His goal came ten minutes after Mexes had broken the deadlock with a 56th-minute header from a cross by Khalilou Fadiga. It was the Burgundy side's third consecutive victory.
Auxerre's victory increased the pressure on leaders RC Lens, who suffered their second league loss of the season away to En Avant Guingamp. Striker Cédric Bardon scored the game's only goal with a powerful 25-metre shot five minutes into the second half.
Nantes beaten again
Champions FC Nantes Atlantique slumped to a 2-1 home defeat against Montpellier Hérault SC. Nantes opened the scoring through Victor Bonilla, the striker heading home a cross by Nicolas Laspalles on the hour. Montpellier defender Franck Silvestre equalised four minutes later before Fodé Mansare sealed the visitors' victory from close range. Nantes remain tied to the foot of the table.
Marseille leave it late
Midfielder André Luís gave Olympique de Marseille a hard-earned 3-2 victory over FC Lorient, netting a free-kick with four minutes to go. It was Marseille’s seventh game unbeaten. In Saturday’s other matches CS Sedan-Ardennes and Stade Rennais FC played out a 0-0 draw while SC Bastia beat ES Troyes Aube Champagne 2-0 thanks to second-half goals from Tony Vairelles and Ousmane Souma.
