Lille and Lyon bolster European claims

LOSC Lille Métropole and Olympique Lyonnais are third and fourth respectively after both recorded victories to keep alive their slim hopes of catching leaders Olympique de Marseille.

LOSC Lille Métropole beat AS Nancy-Lorraine 3-1 to keep their grip on the third and final Ligue 1 UEFA Champions League qualifying berth.

Leading duo Olympique de Marseille and AJ Auxerre drew a blank on Friday night and Lille duly capitalised to move within three points of the latter and eight behind the former. They raced into a 3-0 lead against Nancy courtesy of goals from Yohan Cabaye (33), Gervinho (35) and Pierre-Alain Frau (49) and alhough the visitors pulled one back through Chris Malonga on 54 minutes, it was not enough to deny Lille victory.

Two points behind in fourth are Olympique Lyonnais, who shrugged off their elimination from the UEFA Champions League in midweek with a 1-0 win at Montpellier Hérault SC, earned thanks to Michel Bastos's 72nd-minute strike. Claude Puel's charges trail OM – who have three games left – by ten points with four fixtures still to play.

Also victorious on Sunday were FC Girondins de Bordeaux, who put an end to a six-game run without a win by downing Toulouse FC 1-0, Michaël Ciani's header on 17 minutes proving decisive. The titleholders now lie fifth, two points behind Lyon.

US Boulogne are eight points from safety after being held to a 3-3 draw at home to OGC Nice, who are now all but assured of their own survival. Doubts surround AS Saint-Etienne's survival, on the other hand, after their 4-1 home defeat by RC Lens, while FC Sochaux-Montbéliard beat Stade Rennais FC 2-1 and the game between Valenciennes FC and FC Lorient ended goalless.
