Montpellier Hérault SC replaced Stade Brestois 29 at the top of Ligue 1 with a 1-0 win against OGC Nice.
Olivier Giroud scored the crucial goal seven minutes from time to put Montpellier in first place. After Stade Rennais FC knocked Brest off their perch with a 2-1 home win. Jires Kembo-Ekoko and Jérôme Leroy scored to leave Brest without a win in three matches and in fifth place.
Earlier in the day, Paris Saint-Germain FC had briefly taken top spot thanks to a 2-1 home win against SM Caen. Though Youssef El Arabi scored for the visitors late on, strikes five minutes either side of half-time by Guillaume Hoarau and Mevlüt Erdinç earned PSG victory. They, like Rennes, are a point off the lead.
Olympique de Marseille are level with Brest after leaving it late to secure their sixth success of the season against Toulouse FC, André Ayew scoring the winner two minutes from time but AJ Auxerre missed out on a fourth win in five matches after AS Saint-Étienne's Loïc Perrin cancelled out Jean-Pascal Mignot's opening strike. Elsewhere, there were respective 2-0 wins for AS Nancy-Lorraine and FC Sochaux-Montbéliard against Valenciennes FC and FC Lorient.
