French Cup holders LOSC Lille Métropole and Olympique de Marseille both required extra-time winners to overcome lower-tier opposition while FC Girondins de Bordeaux were taken to penalties as the round of 32 posed another set of problems for France's top-flight sides.
Gianni Bruno made the difference for Lille against fourth-tier AFC Compiègne as his powerful header sealed a 1-0 win six minutes before spot kicks were required. Morgan Amalfitano and Loïc Rémy did likewise for Marseille by delivering a 3-1 victory against Ligue 2 Le Havre AC in extra time, Ryan Mendes da Graça having threatened a shock result when he gave the visitors an early lead.
Things were even tighter for Bordeaux as their tie with third-division US Créteil-Lusitanos ended 2-2, and Francis Gillot's men were grateful to a pair of Cédric Carrasso saves in the shoot-out to send them through.
AC Ajaccio and AJ Auxerre were not so fortunate as they both fell to teams from below the elite, Ajaccio losing 3-2 to fourth-tier FC Bourg-Péronnas after extra time and Auxerre beaten 2-1 at home by Ligue 2 side LB Châteauroux.
The all-Ligue 1 tie between OGC Nice and Stade Rennais FC yielded a goalless draw and a penalty shoot-out win for visitors Rennes, while Paris Saint-Germain FC triumphed 4-0 at Sablé FC.
