A 51st-minute goal from Bruno Cheyrou gave Lille OSC three valuable points against visiting ES Troyes Aube Champagne on Sunday.
Cheyrou was perfectly positioned to meet Mathieu Delpierre’s right-wing cross with a glancing header, leaving Troyes goalkeeper Stéphane Cassard helpless. The home side should have taken the lead in the 21st minute when Salahedine Bassir broke into the Troyes area, only to see his shot brilliantly turned away by Cassard.
Despite the disappointment of exiting the UEFA Cup at the hands of BV Borussia Dortmund on Thursday, LOSC continued to threaten after the break, their defence easily coping with what little the visitors threw at them. The win boosts Lille's chances of a European place next season, although defeat for Troyes means they will have to work hard to secure a UEFA Cup place themselves.
