RC Lens beat Stade Rennais FC 2-0 at home on Wednesday night to remain six points clear of Olympique Lyonnais at the top of Le Championnat thanks to goals by Antoine Sibierski and Stéphane Pedron.
Brazilian striker Sonny Anderson lobbed a brilliant winner as Lyon beat AS Monaco FC 1-0 to keep Lens in their sights with six games to go in the French first division championship race.
Out of nothing
Anderson was at the corner of the penalty area when he saw Monaco goalkeeper Stéphane Porato off his line and lobbed the ball over the keeper for his 12th league goal of the season.
Paris Saint-Germain FC climbed to third with a 1-0 victory at SC Bastia, passing AJ Auxerre on goal difference. Both sides are eleven points adrift of Lens. Nigeria's Bartholomew Ogbeche struck five minutes after the interval, running on to a fine through-ball from Portuguese midfield player Hugo Leal and steering it home as PSG bounced back from their League Cup semi-final loss to FC Girondins de Bordeaux at the weekend. Bastia's veteran defender Frédéric Mendy was shown a red card after making a two-footed lunge at the feet of Portuguese substitute Cristóbal Parralo.
Lille OSC are also on 48 points, but still fifth on goal difference, after their 1-0 win at bottom club FC Metz, who had defender David Régis sent off in the 84th minute for a nasty tackle. Régis caught Lille's Australian striker Mile Sterjovski in the thigh with the studs of both boots.
En Avant Guingamp edged FC Lorient 4-3 in a thrilling relegation battle in which the home side's playmaker Stéphane Carnot and visiting striker Jean-Claude Darcheville both scored twice. Guingamp moved two points above Lorient and out of the relegation zone.
Elsewhere, champions FC Nantes Atlantique fought out a goalless draw with FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, CS Sedan-Ardennes beat Bordeaux 1-0 and Espérance Sportive Troyes AC overcame Montpellier Hérault SC.
