Marseille hold faint hope as Monaco return

André Ayew scored twice as Olympique de Marseille kept their slim title chances alive with a 2-1 win against Toulouse FC, on a day when AS Monaco FC sealed their return to Ligue 1.

André Ayew was the man in the spotlight as Olympique de Marseille kept their slender title hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Toulouse FC.

The Ghanaian international scored in each half as OM refused to succumb to a defeat that would have meant Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain FC, who on Sunday play Olympique Lyonnais, were crowned champions without kicking a ball in anger.

Scored against the run of play, Ayew's first was a header – now something of a habit for the diminutive forward – the 23-year-old flicking in Mathieu Valbuena's cross on the cusp of half-time. Though OM dominated thereafter, with Ayew tapping in his second on 62 minutes, Eden Ben Basat's composure late on provided a nervy finish.

Elsewhere, Florian Jarjat earned ES Troyes AC a crucial win at AC Ajaccio, pulling the 19th-placed side to within a point of safety. Despite rallying from two down, AS Nancy-Lorraine were ultimately sunk by a late FC Girondins de Bordeaux goal. Bottom-placed Stade Brestois 29 cling on by their fingertips after losing to FC Sochaux-Montbéliard.

Meanwhile, AS Monaco FC sealed their return to France's elite after two seasons away, guaranteeing a top-three finish in Ligue 2 with a last-gasp 1-0 win at Nîmes Olympique SC.
