Carvalho leaves Madrid for Monaco

Ricardo Carvalho has joined the side he helped FC Porto defeat in the 2004 UEFA Champions League final, AS Monaco FC, on a one-year deal after leaving Real Madrid CF.

Ricardo Carvalho has joined promoted AS Monaco FC on a one-year contract from Real Madrid CF.

Carvalho, 35, leaves Madrid on a free transfer. He was part of the FC Porto team who defeated Monaco in the UEFA Champions League final in Gelsenkirchen in 2003/04, and links up with midfielder João Moutinho and forward James Rodríguez, who moved from the Portuguese champions for a combined €70m earlier this week.

While at Porto, Carvalho also won the UEFA Cup and three Liga titles as well as the first of his 75 Portugal caps. After the UEFA Champions League success, and reaching the UEFA EURO 2004 final, Carvalho followed José Mourinho from Porto to Chelsea FC, lifting two Premier League titles.

A UEFA Champions League finalist in 2007/08, Carvalho again linked up with Mourinho at Madrid where he arrived for a reported €8m in August 2010. He was a Spanish champion in 2011/12 although his playing time decreased.

"I'm very happy to join AS Monaco FC and take part in a new adventure," said the principality side's newest recruit. "It's a fresh challenge to take."
