FC Girondins de Bordeaux lost 1-0 at SC Bastia and passed up the opportunity to go fifth behind AS Saint-Étienne, who beat LOSC Lille 2-0 on Friday night to make up ground in their UEFA Champions League hunt.
Bordeaux came up short as they attempted to climb to within three points of Les Verts, competing for Ligue 1's third and last UEFA Champions League berth. Midfielder Adama Ba scored the only goal from a quick break in the 42nd minute, firing into the top-right corner from Florian Raspentino's lay-off.
The win lifted Bastia into 12th, one place ahead of OGC Nice, who beat Bastia's Corsican neighbours AC Ajaccio 2-0 thanks to a Christian Brüls strike and Dario Cvitanich's eighth goal of the season.
St-Étienne had moved five points clear in fourth on Friday. Les Verts opened the scoring through Brandão's 55th-minute header, with winger Franck Tabanou sealing the win with a close-range volley on the hour. LOSC's Florent Balmont was dismissed three minutes later and Les Dogues suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this campaign.
Montpellier Hérault SC eased their relegation fears with a 2-0 win at struggling FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in the pick of results elsewhere, while heavy rainfall caused Olympique de Marseille's home match against Valenciennes FC to be postponed.
