Paris sink Marseille to stretch lead

Maxwell and Edinson Cavani hit second-half goals as Paris Saint-Germain overcame arch-rivals Olympique de Marseille 2-0 to move eight points clear in Ligue 1.

Paris Saint-Germain now enjoy an eight-point cushion in Ligue 1 after scoring twice in the second half to see off arch-rivals Olympique de Marseille 2-0.

AS Monaco FC's Saturday loss to AS Saint-Étienne gifted Paris the chance to move even further clear, but they had to wait until after the restart to make their mark. Five minutes into the second period, Maxwell collected a clever pass from Zlatan Ibrahimović and slotted the ball beyond Steve Mandanda. Substitute Edinson Cavani then secured the result 11 minutes from time, heading in a Gregory van der Wiel cross.

Elsewhere, third-placed LOSC Lille fell behind early on at bottom club AC Ajaccio, and ended the game with ten men, but were inspired to a 3-2 victory by Salomon Kalou's hat-trick. The Ivorian forward traded goals with Junior Tallo on two occasions in the first half, before completing his treble with his second penalty of the match on 74 minutes. Les Dogues then survived Adama Soumaoro's 81st-minute dismissal to reclaim third spot from St-Étienne.

As for Olympique Lyonnais, they recorded a second consecutive 0-0 stalemate, following up their goalless outing away against LOSC with the same scoreline at Montpellier Hérault SC.
