AS Monaco FC are through to the last 16 of the French Cup after seeing off local foes OGC Nice 1-0, while Le Mans UC 72, Paris Saint-Germain FC and Grenoble Foot 38 also progressed to the next round.
Monaco had not beaten their Côte d'Azur neighbours at the Stade Louis II since 1996 but, desperate to make up for their disappointing league campaign, they dominated from start to finish despite chances for both teams in the first half. The longer the match went on, the more the visitors found themselves on the back foot, though, and they eventually caved in when substitute Alexandre Licata headed in a François Modesto cross five minutes after being introduced and seven minutes from time.
In the day's other all-Ligue 1 clash, Le Mans needed extra-time to see off struggling Le Havre AC, with Norwegian striker Thorstein Helstad firing the only goal of the game after 98 minutes to send the visitors a step closer to the Stade de France. That is where last year's runners-up PSG will also be hoping to end up after they prevailed 3-0 at fourth-division GFCO Ajaccio, courtesy of a Mateja Kežman double and a Sammy Traoré effort. Elsewhere, top-flight Grenoble triumphed 3-1 at sixth-tier Olympique Grande-Synthe. Holders Olympique Lyonnais host Olympique de Marseille on Wednesday in the most eagerly awaited tie of the round.
