Jaroslav Plašil struck the only goal as FC Girondins de Bordeaux preserved their lead in France with a 1-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain FC, but they have some unexpected company in the top three in Ligue 1.
The Czech striker, 27, got the better of defender Sylvain Armand 24 minutes into the match, connecting with Benoît Trémoulinas's cross to put a fine header past Edel Apoula in the PSG goal. The result leaves the champions four points clear at the top of the table, though more than a few eyebrows have been raised in France at the sight of Montpellier Hérault SC and Valenciennes FC occupying the spaces below them.
Montpellier moved up to second with a 2-1 defeat of struggling Le Mans UC 72, with Lilian Compan's 72nd-minute effort scooping all three points. Valenciennes are third – albeit level on points with Olympique Lyonnais and AJ Auxerre – following a 3-1 home triumph against AS Monaco FC. FC Lorient lost 1-0 at Stade Rennais FC, while Olympique de Marseille remain among the chasing pack, Mamadou Niang, Lucho and Bakari Koné scoring in a 3-1 win at OGC Nice.. AS Saint-Etienne drew 0-0 with FC Sochaux Montbéliard in the evening's other early game.
