Vikingur claim first Faroese Cup

Vikingur won the Faroese Cup for the first time after a 3-2 win over EB/Streymur and in the process denied their opponents a third successive triumph in the competition.

Vikingur won the Faroese Cup for the first time after a 3-2 win over EB/Streymur, who were bidding for a third successive triumph.

Debut success
Goals from Hans Jørgen Djurhuus, Andreas Lava Olsen and Finnur Justinussen helped Vikingur to victory in their first appearance in the cup final after only being formed with the merger of GÍ Gøta and Leirvík ÍF last year. They flew out of the blocks against the holders, hitting the bar in the first 60 seconds and then taking the lead five minutes later when Olsen crossed for Djurhuus to fire in. EB/Streymur responded well and soon replied when Pauli G. Hansen pounced on a half-cleared corner to shoot in off the post.

Frantic finale
Vikingur wrested control back and retook the lead soon after the break when Olsen broke through to beat goalkeeper Gunnar á Steig. EB/Streymur camped themselves in their opponents' half, but when Justinussen made it 3-1 with three minutes left it looked all over. Arnbjørn Hansen got one back straight away, though, to set up a frantic finale with Vikingur doing just enough to hold on for their maiden cup success.
