WIT claim maiden Georgian Cup triumph

Georgi Datunaishvili scored the only goal four minutes from the break as FC WIT Georgia won the Georgian Cup for the first time with a 1-0 victory against holders FC Dinamo Tbilisi.

FC WIT Georgia lifted the Georgian Cup for the first time in their history after a solitary strike from Georgi Datunaishvili helped them to a 1-0 victory against 2009 winners FC Dinamo Tbilisi.

The first Tbilisi derby in the 20-year history of the competition was a nervy affair overall, but produced a goal of real quality to decide it. In a flowing move, Giorgi Vasadze's deft back-heel fed Jaba Lipartia who crossed for Datunaishvili to head in firmly at the near post four minutes before the break.

Before and after that moment of inspiration, there was not a great deal to entertain the crowd of nearly 12,000. WIT came the closest to scoring early on, but were denied by goalkeeper Giorgi Loria who clawed the ball away from under the bar after Irakli Klimiashvili's long-range effort. Although Dinamo made changes at the break – with wingers Donald Djousse and Robertinho coming on to cause unrest in the WIT back line – the holders failed to take advantage.

WIT head coach Gela Gomelauri, whose side will play in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round, said: "When you play Dinamo, be it final or any other match, you cannot be 100% sure you are going to win, but we knew we would have a chance and we're happy to not let it slip." Dinamo coach Kakhaber Kacharava thought his side put too much pressure on themselves, saying: "I could not recognise my team in the first half – we were too tense with so much at stake, but we cannot deny they played well and deserved to win. I congratulate them."
