Germany 3-0 Malta
Cacau scored twice as a depleted Germany began their FIFA World Cup preparations with a 3-0 friendly victory against Malta in Aachen on Thursday.
Despite the absence of players from FC Bayern München and Werder Bremen ahead of their German Cup final meeting on Saturday, as well as captain Michael Ballack as he prepares for the English equivalent, a sell-out crowd turned up at the New Tivoli expecting goals.
The first arrived in the 16th minute, as VfB Stuttgart's Brazilian-born forward Cacau headed in his first goal for Germany from Dennis Aogo's left-wing cross. Joachim Löw made six second-half changes and one of the four debutants, BV Borussia Dortmund striker Kevin Grosskreutz, played a part in the move which led to Cacau drilling in the second in the 58th minute.
The scoring was completed three minutes later when Kenneth Scicluna put through his own net, although Germany squandered numerous other opportunities to extend their lead. "The result isn't good enough given the chances we created," Löw said. "Obviously it would have been better to have the whole squad together for four weeks, but we have to take things as they are. Many young players put in positive performances."
