Following a goalless first half, Thomas Müller – who signed a new five-year contract on Friday – opened the scoring with a quarter of an hour remaining. Schalke featured summer signing Raúl González up front but they fell further behind six minutes later when Miroslav Klose turned in Ivica Olić's cross.
Having prevented Bayern's Hamit Altıntop from directing an effort on goal at the far post early on, Jefferson Farfán teed up Raúl to open the scoring less than 60 seconds later, only for the former Real Madrid CF striker to head wide. Bayern responded with Müller weaving his way through the Schalke defence and setting up Bastian Schweinsteiger, whose effort was excellently saved by Manuel Neuer.
Müller was next to threaten four minutes before the break when only a last-ditch block from Christoph Metzelder kept the Gelsenkirchen club on level terms. Bayern – missing the injured Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry – struck the post through Klose before Raúl elicited an impressive save from stand-in goalkeeper Thomas Kraft.
The 22-year-old saved Louis van Gaal's side again on 72 minutes, somehow clawing Edu Gonçalves's effort off the line, a moment which proved pivotal as Bayern took the lead shortly after. One-on-one with Neuer, Klose took the goalkeeper out of the game by squaring for Müller, who rolled the ball into the empty net. Not to be outdone, Klose made the game safe six minutes later when finishing off Olić's burst down the right.
Van Gaal, celebrating the third trophy of his reign, said: "I always like to win titles, so we can be satisfied. Some of the players who are just back from the World Cup were still tired, but we deserved to win."
