1. FSV Mainz 05 are the new outright leaders of the Bundesliga after maintaining their 100% start to the season on a day when fellow frontrunners TSG 1899 Hoffenheim dropped their first points.
Mainz succeeded where Tottenham Hotspur FC failed in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday by winning at SV Werder Bremen, Marcel Risse and André Schürrle, six minutes after coming on, scoring second-half goals. Gylfi Thor Sigurdsson salvaged a draw for Hoffenheim with a 77th-minute equaliser away to 1. FC Kaiserslautern after Erwin Hoffer had struck two second-half goals to cancel out Luiz Gustavo's opener.
FC Bayern München are already seven points off the pace after a goalless 90 minutes against 1. FC Köln. The visitors have never lost at the Fußball Arena München, their previous three visits yielding a win and two draws.
VfB Stuttgart recorded their first victory of the season in hugely impressive fashion, Russian international striker Pavel Pogrebnyak scoring a hat-trick in a 7-0 home success against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, while VfL Wolfsburg also have a first victory under their belts after beating Hannover 96 2-0.
