Bundesliga high-fliers 1. FSV Mainz 05 missed the chance to reclaim the lead after suffering a 1-0 defeat at SC Freiburg.
Papiss Demba Cissé's penalty (64) condemned the second-placed side to their third defeat in four league matches and handed Borussia Dortmund the opportunity to stretch their lead at the top to four points against Hannover 96 on Sunday.
It was also three losses in four for VfL Wolfsburg, who lost 3-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt. Pirmin Schwegler set up Theofanis Gekas for the opener (26) before adding a second seven minutes before half-time, while Gekas scored again from a 55th-minute penalty as the hosts climbed to third.
Hamburger SV are just a point behind Michael Skibbe's men after coming from behind to beat TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, who took an early lead through Sejad Salihović's spot kick. Heiko Westermann (45) and Mladen Petrić turned the match on its head.
FC Bayern München slipped to ninth after squandering a 2-1 half-time lead in a 3-3 draw with lowly VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, while 1. FC Nürnberg share an identical league record with sixth-placed Hamburg following a 3-1 defeat of 1. FC Köln. FC Schalke 04 remain above the relegation zone thanks to Friday's 3-0 success against FC St. Pauli.
