FC Schalke 04 also enjoyed a 4-0 triumph at the expense of fellow UEFA Champions League hopefuls SV Werder Bremen, Raúl González scoring a hat-trick.
Elsewhere, Hannover 96 earned a 3-2 win over Hamburger SV, Mike Hanke grabbing the last-gasp winner, while 1. FC Kaiserslautern had Croatian internationals Stiven Rivić, Ivo Iličević and Srdjan Lakić to thank for a 3-1 win at 1. FC Nürnberg.
