A resurgent FC Schalke 04 registered their fourth win in six Bundesliga matches by triumphing 1-0 at 1. FSV Mainz 05, after Papiss Demba Cissé had inspired SC Freiburg to victory.
Through to the UEFA Champions League last 16 as Group B winners, Schalke have begun to transfer some of their European form to the domestic stage in recent weeks. That continued at Mainz, where Klaas-Jan Huntelaar fired an early penalty against the post before Jefferson Farfán's decisive 30th-minute strike. Mainz were also profligate from the spot, with Manuel Neuer redeeming himself by saving André Schürrle's kick 18 minutes from time after fouling Ádám Szalai.
Felix Magath's team rose from 15th place to tenth as a result while Freiburg, in fifth, are also going well thanks largely to the exploits of Cissé. The Senegalese striker took his tally to 13 goals in 16 top-flight appearances this term with a double in a 3-0 home defeat of strugglers VfL Borussia Monchengladbach.
