Leverkusen leave it late to floor struggling Stuttgart

Bayer 04 Leverkusen cut Borussia Dortmund's lead back down to ten points after hitting four goals for the second match in succession, and there was joy too for VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen cut Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga lead back down to ten points with a 4-2 win against VfB Stuttgart.

Jupp Heynckes' charges were 4-0 winners against FC Metalist Kharkiv in their UEFA Europa League round of 32 opener in midweek and they hit four goals again, although it took late strikes from Stefan Reinartz (81) and Stefan Kiessling (90+1) to make sure of the three points. Martin Harnik (16) and Zdravko Kuzmanović (52) had twice pegged back earlier efforts by Kiessling (6) and Gonzalo Castro (41), but Stuttgart were unable to prevent their 14th league defeat this term.

They are now level on points with last-placed VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, who marked Lucien Favre's first game in charge by coming from behind to win 2-1 against FC Schalke 04. Marco Reus (12) and Mohamadou Idrissou (23) responded to Peer Kluge's opener (2) to secure a third win in six league matches for the struggling side.
